       Word meaning approximately the same as converso, or Jew, who converted to Christianity, or New Christian. The origin of this term is obscure. Marrano in the Spanish language means "pig," but some scholars claim that the word comes from the Arabic and various meanings have been given to it. In older Portuguese-English dictionaries, marrano means "cursed, excommunicated, filthy." After the 1496 expulsion of those Jews who refused to convert to Christianity, certain Marranos adopted Catholicism only formally and secretly practiced a form of Judaism. Small numbers of "Crypto-Jews" or "Secret Jews" carried on such practices in remote provincial towns of Portugal, including Belmonte, Beira Alta, into the 20th century.

    Derivatives: καραβίς `kind of sea-crab' (Gal., Sch.), καράβιον = ἐφόλκιον (H. s. ἐφόλκια, sch.); prob. also καραβαία δίκρουν ξύλον H. (s. Grošelj Razprave 2, 11). - Beside it κηραφίς = καραβίς (Nic. Al. 394) (sec. after the names in - φ(ο)-; and epic language imitating η for α?).
    Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
    Etymology: Unknown; cf. Cohen BSL 27 (1927) 100, wo gives several similar Arabic words. Acc. to Bq s. v. - βος un-Greek (Macedonian) for Gr. - φος \< IE. - bho-. Fur. (index s.v.) connects several words; first there is καρβάρεοι κάραβοι; then there is a prenasalized form καράμβιος (Ar. Byz. Epit. 9, 11; v.l. Arist. HA 551b17), and κεράμβυξ s.v. (Nic. Fr. 39, H.) and κεράμβηλον Η. (- ηλο- is well known from Pre-Greek), which cannot be derived from κέρας (as Frisk suggests). He further posits *σκαραβαῖος on the basis of Lat. scarabaeus, which seems unavoidable. The form σκορόβυλος no doubt continues *σκαραβ-υλ-, where the α's turned to - ο- before the - υ- in the following syllable (Fur. 340 discusses the phenomenon, but did not see that it operated here); so here we have evidence for σκαραβ. Then there is γραψαῖος (Diph. Siph. ap. Ath. 3, 106d) = κάραβος, which he assumes to stand for *γαρψαῖος (doubtful, s.v.). Further s. on σκορπίος (which in my view does not belong here). It is clear that we have here a Pre-Greek word with several of its usual variants. So we have * (s)karab-. - From κάραβος Lat. cārabus `crab', `small boat' (with Rom., e. g. Fr. caravelle) and a Slavic word for `ship', e. g. Russ. koráblь; s. Vasmer Russ. et. Wb. s. v. with lit. and crit.

    •• * Интересная – в том числе и с точки зрения перевода – история произошла на наших глазах в Ираке со словом caucus. Разрабатывая концепцию передачи полномочий иракскому органу власти, американские оккупационные власти первоначально выдвинули идею выборов такого органа через механизм так называемых «региональных собраний», обозначаемых английским (а по существу чисто американским) словом caucus. В одной из статей Washington Post система была охарактеризована так: a transitional government selected by carefully vetted local caucuses.

    •• В American Heritage Dictionary caucus определяется как a meeting of the members of a political party to decide questions of policy and the selection of candidates. В Ираке политические партии находились в тот момент в зачаточном состоянии, так что это определение тут не подходит. Merriam-Webster Online дает в общем аналогичное определение: a closed meeting of a group of persons belonging to the same political party or faction usually to select candidates or to decide on policy; also: a group of people united to promote an agreed-upon cause.

Если бы с самого начала привлекли ООН, то слово caucus просто не возникло бы.
    •• А как быть с переводом? Предлагаемое словарями совещание партийной фракции остается приемлемым, если речь идет о большинстве чисто американских контекстов. Но, видимо, в некоторых случаях – представительная ассамблея и даже собрание общественности (последнее подойдет и к американскому town hall meeting, хотя такие собрания – в отличие от caucus – проводятся только с целью поговорить, обсудить проблемы, а не для принятия решений).

    Etymology: Old word for `small cattle', which is well attested in Celtic, e.g. OIr. mil n. `small animal', and is sporadically found also in Westgerm., e.g. in OLFranc. māla `cow', Dutch maal `young cow' (here also the old name of the Harz, Μηλί-βοκον ὄρος?). -- Against these words, which all can go back on IE * mēlo-, stands with a-vowel Arm. mal `sheep', also SmRuss. mal' f. `small cattle, young sheep', Russ. (Crimea) malíč `kind of Crimea-sheep'. It eems obvious to sonnect these words with the general Slav. adj. for `small', e.g. OCS malъ, Russ. mályj. A further step leads to the Germ. word for `small, narrow' in Goth. smals etc., which is often used of small cattle, e.g. OWNo. smale m. `small animal', OHG smalaz fihu ' Schmal- vieh, small cattle'. If we posit IE *( s)mēl-, ( s)mōl- (OCS malь etc.), ( s)mǝl- (Arm. mal, Goth. smals etc.)[this means * smHlo-?], it would seem possible, to bring all words mentioned together.
